IRVINE, Calif. – Goalkeeper
Riley Urquiza collected her fifth PacWest Defender of the Week award on Monday, putting a bow on another superb week for her and the nationally ranked Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team.
CUI moved up from No. 12 to No. 10 in the national United Soccer Coaches poll on Tuesday, after completing September with six clean sheets and a 5-0-1 overall record.
This comes on the heels of Concordia's two shutouts this past week where Urquiza collected five total saves and
helped her squad earn a 2-0 win over Menlo College to open PacWest Conference play. CUI also
fended off trouble from Cal State San Marcos in a scoreless tie. The Cougars were receiving votes in the national poll as well.
Now in her third season representing Concordia, Urquiza has been involved in 18 shutouts during her collegiate career. She moved into sole possession of second place in the program's all-time list last week after the results over Cal State San Marcos and Menlo.
Bekah Garvin holds the top mark in the CUI women's soccer record book with 25 career shutouts. She played at Concordia from 2009 to 2012.
The nationally ranked Golden Eagles begin October outscoring opponents by an impressive 12-0 margin.
CUI brings their six-game unbeaten streak into their first home conference game this coming Thursday, Oct. 3 against Biola. That contest begins at 6:30 p.m. after the men play first at 4 p.m.
The Golden Eagles then round out the week with a Saturday night match with Fresno Pacific. It will be another PacWest doubleheader with the Sunbirds at the same times as Thursday.
