Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Channa Hart

Day Two Split for Golden Eagles

Irvine, Calif – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team ended day two of the Golden Eagle Classic with a split. After the first win of the season against Colorado Christian, the Golden Eagles defeated Northwest Nazarene (3-1) then lost to Alaska Fairbanks (1-3) on Friday afternoon.

The first match of the day started with an energetic first set and a big lead to match. Senior Kennedy Farley came out of the gates swinging with big kills to get momentum moving. Freshman Jadyn Orava followed suit with her own kills to secure the lead. With a few crucial blocks, NNU managed to close the gap, but an ace from Orava and a kill from freshman middle blocker Delaney Gregg extended the lead to 16-12. Nearing the end of the set, NNU kept the Golden Eagles at the 24th point. The Nighthawks sent a few balls through the block to inch their way back. Despite being stopped twice, Farley fought through the block to capture the winning point for the first set.

The second set slipped through Concordia's grasp. NNU made a big 8-point comeback, taking advantage of CUI's mistakes to capture the set. Bouncing back, the Golden Eagles distanced themselves from the Nighthawks early in the fourth set. The key scorers for CUI were Jadyn Orava with 12 kills, Kennedy Farley with 10, and Caitlin Jarrell with 8. Concordia's two setter offense resulted in 21 assists for Kawehi Chang and 18 for Macy Scheer. The scores for the sets were as follows: 25-21, 24-26, 25-17, and 25-15.

Alaska Fairbanks proved a worthy opponent against the Golden Eagles. The four-set match was neck-and-neck with scores of 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, and 19-25. Senior Kennedy Farley led the team with a hitting average of .412. Red-shirt freshman Makena Thomas wore the libero jersey in the fourth to switch things up for Concordia. Not too long after, Delaney Gregg soared in with three solo blocks which shifted the momentum of the game. The Golden Eagles crept back up to make it 19-22 before the Nanooks secured the win.

The Green and the Gold will wrap up the Golden Eagle Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7. The final match is against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
