HILO, HI. - Starting the New Year, the women's basketball team faced off against the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans.

From the opening jump ball, both the Vulcans and the Golden Eagles were battling back and forth. After trading baskets the entire first quarter, the final score after one was the Vulcans on top 17-16.

The second quarter was just like the first, with both teams competing at a high level. To end the second quarter, Cadence Tarrant grabbed her 12th rebound of the first half, swinging it out to Hannah Vela, who then passed it to Sierra Clark for an open three to end the half. At that time, the Golden Eagles were on top by a bucket, 34-32.

Coming back from the half, the game was a dogfight for the rest of the match up. Sophomore Izzy Navarro contributed huge offensive output and had a career-high for the Golden Eagles, scoring 28 points and leading all scorers. Another massive contributor for CUI was freshman forward Cadence Tarrant, who made her first career start in big fashion, putting up a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Unfortunately, when the final buzzer sounded, the Vulcans outlasted the Golden Eagles and took the game by a final score of 74-64.

CUI visits Hawaii Pacific this Saturday to close out the Hawaii road trip before returning home for a date with Vanguard on Thursday, Jan 9 at 5 p.m.
