HONOLULU, Hawai'i –
Miguel Arroyo converted an early penalty kick on his way to netting two goals and Concordia University Irvine never looked back Thursday in a 4-0 win over an undermanned Chaminade squad out on the islands.
The victory pushed Concordia into first place in the PacWest Conference standings as CUI now has 15 points by virtue of its fifth victory in seven league games thus far. Vanguard, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific currently join Concordia in the Top four spots – which will ultimately include the four teams that go to the PacWest Conference Tournament.
The Golden Eagles earned a penalty kick in the ninth minute after one of the Silverswords put a hand on the ball inside the box. Arroyo calmed stepped up, picked out a spot and chose to go bottom right to beat the Chaminade keeper.
The score remained 1-0 until shortly before intermission. In the 43rd minute, freshman midfielder
Gianluca Guimaraes crossed the ball to
Jordan Toy who headed in an insurance goal. The score came off what was initially a free kick, as
Angel Reyes decided to pass to the left flank where he saw Guimaraes wide open as opposed to smashing the ball towards the goal as is more customarily done off a set piece.
Arroyo capitalized again off a pass from Toy in the 55th minute. Toy tapped it to Arroyo after two Silverswords engulfed him and the former All-Region nominee smoothly converted to make it a 3-0 margin. The senior has now scored four times this fall and ended the day with the team lead with 12 total points so far.
Sophomore
Marcus Ozmai net his first career goal with a beauty of a shot in the 72nd minute to cap the scoring. He sent a screamer to the right side from outside the box after
Anthony Ocampo sent it over to him along the far side of the pitch.
Goalkeeper
Sebastian Marin earned his fourth individual shutout of the year. This marked the fifth time this semester that CUI has managed to keep a clean sheet (Griffin Welsh helped Marin put the finishing touches on the team's road win over Westmont back in September)
In head coach Joshus Glover's first year in charge, the Golden Eagles have now already surpassed last year's win total with three matches still to be played. CUI finished the 2024 campaign with a 6-7-2 overall record.
This year's squad is now 5-2 in conference play and 7-5-1 overall.
