For Whom The Bella Tolls

CUI Women's Soccer Shuts Out Opponent For 11th Time This Season; Barrett & Urquiza Lead The Way

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Forgive us if you've heard (or read) this before. But make no mistake, this is not a "Copy and Paste" of a previous women's soccer article.

And it's not just déjà vu either because what happened on Wednesday night for the Concordia University Irvine women's team has occurred more than just twice this regular season.

For the sixth time this season, Concordia's Bella Barrett scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal early in the first half in a shutout victory. Barrett scored i n the third minute of action against Biola when a cross from Elle Soleau caromed her way and she quickly angled her body to get a shot off before the defense could react for the 1-0 lead. Kalli Cho was also credited with an assist on the play.

Barrett moved into a tie for second place all-time at Concordia with nine career game-winning goals. The junior is tied with former CUI forward Jadenn Carrillo (2019-22) and trails only Megan Daniels (2012-14) who tallied 16 in her illustrious career.

The Orange Lutheran High School alum has scored now in the 17th, 4th, 5th, 12th, 3rd and 3rd minutes in those six wins where she helped CUI pounce on an early lead.

Barrett would make it a brace on the afternoon and add her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the second half. The Villa Park, Calif. native scored in the 64th minute off a pass from Anjelina Nieto to push the lead to a more comfortable 2-0 margin. Ashley Grubert was also part of the buildup and earned an assist.

On top of all that, CUI senior and former PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year Riley Urquiza teamed with the defense to collect her tenth individual clean sheet this semester. She stopped multiple scary attempts by the host Eagles to preserve the goose egg up on the scoreboard in the second half and wound up with seven saves.

Concordia now boasts 10 wins – which have all been shutouts – and 11 total clean sheets in 2025 (this includes the 0-0 draw vs Point Loma).

Entering Thursday, Concordia has claimed 18 points so far in the PacWest standings and sits in second place with one match left. A few other teams in the league however, still have multiple games left with more chances to earn points down the stretch.

The top four teams in the conference table will qualify for the PacWest Conference Tournament which will be held in San Diego by Point Loma Nazarene University from Thursday, Nov. 13 to Saturday, Nov 15.
