Irvine, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles opened PacWest play in dominant fashion on Tuesday night, riding a blistering first half and a balanced scoring effort to a 72–61 victory over the visiting Westmont Warriors inside CU Arena. With the win, CUI improves to 4–3 overall and 1–0 in PacWest, setting the tone for conference play with poise, physicality, and big-time performances across the rotation.
CUI wasted no time establishing control. The Golden Eagles exploded for 42 first-half points, tied with their highest opening-half output of the young season, and shot efficiently while clamping down defensively. The interior presence of Nick Corbett, who tallied 13 points and 9 rebounds, helped set the tone early as the Golden Eagles punished Westmont in the paint.
But the night belonged to MaCarhy Morris, who delivered a composed and aggressive performance from start to finish. Morris finished with 20 points, attacking downhill repeatedly and converting 10 of 11 at the free-throw line.Â
Marcellus Edwards added a critical boost with 14 points on an ultra-efficient 6-of-8 shooting, including two key three-pointers that helped CUI create first-half separation. Bench play was another major factor, as the Golden Eagles' reserves outscored Westmont's bench 21–20, highlighted by Ben Krystkowiak's 8 points and Jackson Tucker's 7 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe.
Defensively, CUI stayed locked in despite Westmont's push in the second half. The Warriors shot above 50% from the field but were limited to just 2-for-13 from deep, a credit to the Golden Eagles' perimeter pressure. CUI also converted turnovers into points, finishing with a 15–7 advantage in points off takeaways, and pushed the pace effectively with 14 fast-break points.
