CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine men's tennis squad improved to 4-0 on the young season after coming away with a hard-fought victory on Friday over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road.
Adam Large lived up to his last name and was a huge reason why Concordia locked down the 4-3 victory. He was rewarded on Monday by being named Co-PacWest Player of the Week for his efforts in raising the profile of the CUI men's tennis team.
Large won at No. 3 singles for the clinching point of the match and also won at No. 2 doubles with teammate
Max Renz. Large took care of business 6-3, 6-2 in solo play and he and Renz won 7-6 (7-4) when playing together.
Collecting that doubles point was huge as the team split the six singles matches.
Joining Large in the win column was junior
Adam Kartzinel at the No. 5 spot and
Oleksandr Kolesnychenko at the No. 6 slot. Kartzinel prevailed in three sets and finished strong with a 6-1 decision after posting that same score in the opening set of his matchup. The freshman Kolesnychenko mirrored Large's solid outing with a 6-3, 6-2 win of his own.
CUI will next play an exhibition match against Caltech on Saturday. The CUI women will play a countable match as well against Caltech.
The men then open up PacWest Conference action down in San Diego on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when the Golden Eagles visit Point Loma at 3 p.m.
