FRESNO, Calif. - The Concordia women's water polo team went face-to-face with No. 7 Fresno State in their first weekend of GCC play.
The Fresno State Bulldogs came into the match prepared and initially overwhelmed Concordia with a six-point lead. The Bulldogs kept finding the back of the net and looked like they wouldn't relent anytime soon.
It wasn't until junior Allyson Corbett cut through the water with thirty seconds remaining in the first period to switch things in Concordia's favor.
Despite the first goal, Concordia struggled to get a shot through Fresno State's defense. Sofia Smith made things happen in the second period and Anna Tyukasz in the third, but Concordia couldn't surpass the single-goal threshold.
Sierrah Ferguson was a bright light for the Golden Eagles. She tallied two goals in the final period, which opened the door for Anna Tyukasz to find her second goal of the day. This was the highest scoring period for the Golden Eagles with three overall.
Defensively, Concordia's goalie Jaden Soto stepped up with 10 saves to slow down the Bulldogs, but Fresno State proved its dominance repeatedly throughout the match.
By the end of game, Concordia had lost 6-20.
NEXT UP: The Golden Eagles head into the Convergence Tournament in Orange, Calif. The first opponent will be Villanova on Friday, Feb. 28 at 10:15 a.m., then Marist at 2 p.m.
