IRVINE, Calif. – Entering this matchup, the Golden Eagles had struggled a bit against ranked teams in PacWest play, but that narrative changed when the Penguins from Dominican University came to town.
Building off their momentum from a dominant 6-1 win over the Knights the previous Friday, the Golden Eagles were locked in from the start of the doubles matches against the Penguins. In the opening doubles match,
Bryn Johnson and
Sophie Rachor secured a strong win over their opponents. The Penguins quickly tied it up with a doubles win of their own, leaving it to
Alicia Da Re and
Jessica Bear.
It came down to the wire, but the Golden Eagles'
Alicia Da Re and
Jessica Bear clinched the last two points of the match, earning an overall point for CUI, who led 1-0 heading into singles play.
Having faced strong competition earlier in the season, the Golden Eagles were confident in their ability to compete with the best. The order of finish for CUI was 1, 4, 3, 2, 6, 5, starting with an early point for DUC. The Golden Eagles responded with three consecutive wins, securing a commanding 5-2 victory over the Penguins.
This was the program's first win over a top-25 team in the 2025 season and brings the Golden Eagles to a 6-3 record in PacWest play and 9-4 overall, placing them in fourth place in the standings.
