IRVINE, Calif. – After a long trip in Hawai'i the CUI baseball team was back in action at the Golden Eagles Field playing against ranked No. 15 Point Loma. The Golden Eagles finished 1-1 on the day after losing the first game followed by a late surge by CUI to win.
CUI 6, PLNU 7
Matthew Kaiser started on the mound for CUI and went four innings. Although he picked up his first loss of the season he only allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters.
Evan Langer came in to pitch another three innings while
Josh Pugh came in to close out the game for the Golden Eagles.
Isaiah Walz went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Four other players contributed with two hits each while
Haku Dudoit led CUI with two RBIs.
The Sea Lions went on to score first taking a 5-0 lead but
Landry Spitler blasted a two run homer to cut the deficit 5-2. Point Loma went on to score another two runs putting up seven runs. Concordia had a late push in the eighth with a 2 RBI single from Dudoit and an RBI single from Walz in the ninth but the Sea Lions pitching closed out the game by a close 7-6 score.
CUI 3, PLNU 1
Point Loma jumped out with one run scored in the second and both teams remained scoreless until a late surge from CUI in the bottom of the sixth allowed them to score three runs with two outs. Two consecutive walks put Dudoit and Erickson on base and Walz knocked a two RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. The Sea Lions pitcher had two consecutive wild pitches to bring in a run for CUI and take a 3-1 lead.
Tank Espalin went 2-for-3 while
Wyatt Madison and
Isaiah Walz added a hit for the Golden Eagles.
Jake Covey was the starting pitcher for game two and was lights out for CUI as he pitched his second complete game of the season. The Costa Mesa, Calif. native only allowed five hits while striking out 12 batters tying his 2025 season high previously at Chaminade on Mar. 1.
The Golden Eagles will be on the road as they take on No. 5 Westmont in a four game series. The series will play back-to-back days starting Friday Mar. 21 and will finish Saturday Mar. 22 with 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. start times for both days.
