IRVINE, Calif. - Not even a few rain drops could dampen the spirits of the CUI men's tennis team after an unorthodox match with Hawai'i Hilo.
In a battle of Top 50 teams in the ITA DII rankings,
Adam Kartzinel fended off a late charge on Monday night to win at No. 5 singles and tie the match 3-3 overall.
Rain paused the match until Tuesday morning with freshman
Oleksandr Kolesnychenko locked in a three-set battle with his oppponent at the No. 6 slot. When play resumed, Kolesnychenko rose to the occasion, winning the third set 6-2 in impressive fashion and delivering the 4-3 victory to Concordia.
CUI also won the doubles point on Monday afternoon - which proved to be critical in the outcome, as both teams ultimately split the six singles matches.
Adam Large won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to help the cause.
The Golden Eagles entered the week ranked No. 36 in the ITA DII rankings while the Vulcans at No. 45.
CUI improved to 11-2 overall - and the only two losses have come against nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific (by a slim margin of 4-3) and
this past Sunday against No. 4 Lubbock Christian (4-2 decision).
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a home date with Stanton this Saturday, March 22 at 11 a.m. before another PacWest foe, Point Loma, visits on Tuesday, March 25 at 1 p.m.
