Orange You Glad CUI Defeats Chapman 12-11

CUI Sinks Claws in First Victory at the Claremont Convergence

ORANGE, Calif. - Concordia women's water polo split on the final day of the Claremont Convergence, capturing a nail-biter of a win against tournament host, Chapman University. The Golden Eagles fell to La Salle later that day to end the weekend.

CUI 12 CHAPMAN 11

After taking on two nationally-ranked teams, Concordia blazed into Saturday morning's competition with newfound determination. The Golden Eagles captured their first win of the tournament in a thrilling close match.

Chapman created a five-goal lead early on, but Concordia's very own Sofia Smith and Anna Tyukasz got things started for the day.

The Golden Eagles bounced back in the second period with five goals to Chapman's two, a reversal of the first. Strong performances from Munroe Blem, Sierrah Ferguson, and Allyson Corbett kept the Golden Eagles pushing forward. Emeline Smiley was crucial with the assists, collecting three overall.

Hannah Edwards and Anna Tyukasz were key leaders for Concordia with hat tricks under their belts and three steals between them. The dynamic duo has proven time and time again that multi-scoring matches are just another day's work.

A few changes occurred in Concordia's defensive line. Kailah Peery made her debut in the cage as Concordia's goalie and tallied 6 saves, then freshman Grace Noyes popped in between the bars during the final period. The Green and the Gold outscored Chapman in the last eight minutes, making it 12-11 and sealing the victory.

CUI 10 LA SALLE 16

At the start, both teams were neck-and-neck, tallying four goals each. Multiple Golden Eagles were able to get points on the board, but La Salle pushed ahead for the remainder of the game.

Sofia Smith and Anna Tyukasz led the charge against the Explorers with two goals apiece. Freshman Lucy Aggs also got in on the action and scored her first goal as a Golden Eagle. Even with eight players contributing to the offense, La Salle consistently kept ahead of Concordia, specifically in the second and third period. Valiant defensive efforts from Kailah Peery and Grace Noyes gave CUI a fighting chance against the Explorers, but La Salle was deemed the winner once the clock ran out.

Overall, Concordia closed out the Claremont Convergence with a 1-3 record.

NEXT UP: Concordia has its home opener on Friday, March 7 against San Diego State. It will be the third GCC game for the Green and the Gold and will take place at William Woollett Aquatics Center. It all starts at 12:30 pm. Come out and support your Golden Eagles!
