A Lopsided Luau

Honolulu, Hawai'i - The CUI softball team shut down the Sharks from HPU in a doubleheader, outscoring them 20-0 on the day.

GM 1: CUI 16, HPU 0

The Golden Eagles offense exploded for 16 total runs in game 1 vs HPU, and freshman Kacie Gossett also tossed a no-hitter against the Sharks. Gossett faced 16 total batters in five innings pitched,  and thanks to an early start from the Golden Eagles offense, Kacie Gossett had some breathing room in the first inning because the green and gold had already scored 8 runs by the time Gossett had reached the mound for the first time.

The hottest hitters in CUI's lineup right now are undoubtedly Kayla Rodgers and Audrey Robles. Rodgers went 2-2  with a triple and 4 RBI and Robles went 3-4 with 2 doubles, and she now leads the team in batting average at .475, and also in RBI's with 24. Robles and Rodgers both combine for 57 RBI on the season.

Senior Shelli Faulk picked up 2 RBI's in the third inning when she hit a bomb to make the score 14-0. Faulk also went 2-2 in game 1. Caitlynn Campbell went 2-3, and adds to the list of Golden Eagles with multi-hit games. One of the final highlights of the game was freshman Mya Diaz doubled to left field in the top of the third inning. 


GM 2: CUI 4, HPU 0

Caitlynn Campbell and Mya Diaz were responsible for the 4 runs in this game, and the first two runs came in the second inning on the second double of the day for Diaz. Then in the bottom of the sixth,Campbell hit a 2 run bomb to secure the 4-0 win. Campbell ended 4-6 on the day. 

After an impressive no-hitter from Gossett in GM 1, Jayden Nishi got the start in the circle for GM 2, and she followed very closely in Gossett's footsteps and only allowed the Sharks 2 hits in 23 batters faced. Nishi walked NO batters, and struck out six. Another impressive outing for Nishi puts her at 9-0 on the season.

After today's doubleheader, CUI has outscored all Hawai'i opponents 60-16 so far on their trip to the islands. The final game of the trip for the Golden Eagles will be tomorrow, March 8th at 1PM (PT).
