IRVINE, Calif. - The second home game of the year for CUI brought new competition that was Rollins College nationally ranked #14 in NCAA DII.
Heading into this matchup, it would be the Golden Eagles fifth game in a row against a nationally ranked opponent. Opening up the game, the Tars made the first move, scoring a minute and a half into the game. The Golden Eagles weren't far behind, running some great offense, leading to goals from
Brody MacDonald and
Max Texter finding the back of the net twice. CUI led after the first period 3-2.
After taking the lead, the Golden Eagles really pumped the gas and kept scoring and scoring, having led by more than four points at one point in the game. Through CUI's relentless attack, the Tars could not get into a rhythm. Making huge contributions from the Golden Eagles was FOS
Cade Poe, winning 18 FO's to the Tars eight. Making sure CUI had the ball to start off was essential to the success of the team.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles were looking to hold onto an 8-11 lead, but the Tars had other plans. Rollins scored the last three goals of the game to force CUI's first OT this season.
In the overtime period, both teams were unable to find the back of the net partly because of great saves from the goalies, including
Daniel Yang, who made three great saves in the OT period. The Golden Eagles defense held strong as well not allowing any super clean looks for shots towards the goal.
Using the last possession of the OT to their advantage, the Golden Eagles took an opportunity from an opening they saw on the left side of the field and scored the GOLDEN GOAL, which was
Jeremy Barnes for his second goal of the game. This is the first win over a top-25 program team for the Golden Eagles and is a significant win for the program overall.
