Unlucky 13

IRVINE, Calif. – After coming up with two impressive wins Friday to start the series against Jessup the CUI baseball team was looking to continue their momentum into Saturday. The two teams battled it out in double header fashion but the Golden Eagles came up just short in both losing by one run in each game.

CUI 2, JSP 3 (13 Innings)

Isaiah Walz and Haku Dudoit led CUI going 3-for-5 on the game while Landry Spitler and Wyatt Madison had two hits each.

The Golden Eagles struck first with an RBI from Kaipo Haole and Dudoit in the second and third frame. The Warriors managed to tie the game in the sixth off a couple singles. In the bottom of the ninth the Warriors intentionally walked Madison and Niko Santamaria to load the bases with only one out. CUI hit into a double play to force extra innings.

Both teams remained scoreless until the designated hitter for the Warriors hit a solo home run in the 13th to take the lead 3-2. The Golden Eagles were intentionally walked five times in the extra innings to load the bases marking this the most of the season.

Jake Covey started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and had is longest outing going 12 innings while striking out 10 batters. Richie Kingsborough and Nathan Hunter came in as relievers after Jessup took the lead.

The Golden Eagles tried to get some offense going in the bottom of the seventh starting with a walk and a sacrifice bunt from Santamaria but the Warriors were able to close out the game with two players on.

The Golden Eagles will have their last home stand of the PacWest conference against Hawai'i Hilo starting Saturday Apr. 19 with 1 p.m. and 4:30 start times. CUI will conclude the series with a rare Monday double header starting at 2 p.m.
