Golden Eagles Corral Broncos 9-8

Goalie Soto Surpasses 500 Saves In Final Conference Game

IRVINE, Calif. - All in a day's work for the Concordia women's water polo team, capturing their third straight home win of the season. The Golden Eagles defeated Santa Clara in a thrilling close match to wrap up regular conference play.

Concordia controlled the pace of the game in the first period, tallying three goals to Santa Clara's one. Anna Tyukasz and Hannah Edwards led the initial charge for the Golden Eagles. But, a daring comeback from the Broncos forced Concordia to rethink it's game plan going into the half.

The Broncos outscored the Golden Eagles in the third period. Although Concordia fell behind, freshmen duo Anna Tyukasz and Sierrah Ferguson scored goals to keep the Green and the Gold afloat, CUI 6 – SCU 7.

With four minutes left in the game, CUI sprinter and key scorer Hannah Edwards tied it up at eight thanks to an assist from Mattie Herzog. Edwards leads the GCC with 55 sprint wins over the course of the season. Her speed in the water has helped Concordia gain the advantage on many occasions including the matchup against Santa Clara. The Golden Eagles didn't stop there. Sierrah Ferguson scored the game-winning goal with a spin and bounce to make it CUI 9 – SCU 8.

With time still left on the clock, Concordia's defensive line held off Santa Clara's attempts to get back in the game. Jaden Soto stopped a crucial shot made by a Bronco attacker and the Golden Eagles maintained the advantage until the clock ran out. The sophomore goalie collected 9 saves and 2 steals on the day which contributed to her 500th career save. She is ranked second in the conference with 246 saves overall.

Concordia secured its first conference win of the season before the GCC Conference Tournament held in Los Angeles, Calif.
