SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team traveled down the coast to play against Point Loma making up their double header from March due to the weather. Although the Golden Eagles out-hit the Sea Lions Point Loma came out with another two wins.
CUI 4, PLNU 7
Junior
Josh Pugh started on the mound for CUI going 4.2 innings allowing four hits and six earned runs.
Evan Langer and
Troy May came into the game and pitched the remaining 3.1 innings only allowing one hit each.
Sawyer Voortman went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run while four other players contributed with at least one hit.
Catcher
Vito Fowler got things started for CUI as he hit a two run blast to right field marking his first home run of the season. This led the Golden Eagles to jump out with a 2-0 lead in the third. Point Loma answered back with a three run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth inning
Haku Dudoit hit a sacrifice fly to bring
Isaiah Walz home. Point Loma had bases loaded with two outs and hit another home run to extend their lead 7-3. Concordia tried to get things rolling in the seventh with a passed ball from the Sea Lions pitcher bringing
Niko Santamaria home.
CUI 2, PLNU 7
Point Loma continued their momentum into the second game of the day as they scored four runs in the first inning. The Sea Lions went on to score a run the nest three inning having a 7-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
In the top of the fifth
Anthony Pacino came in to pinch hit and singled up the middle with Nicholas Erickson being patient at the plate and drawing a walk.
Kaipo Haole hit a single to load the bases for CUI with only one out.
Tank Espalin hit a two run RBI through the left side to put the Golden Eagles on the board but CUI hit into a double play and ended the run.
Jack Hyde had his first start of the season and went 0.2 innings allowing two hits and four earned runs. Relievers
Cameron Sims,
Scott Wood, and
Dominic Nunes pitched and had a combined five strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles will host newly added member to the PacWest conference Jessup starting Friday Apr. 11 with 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. start time and finish the series Saturday Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
