LA MIRADA, Calif. – Heading into the last series of the year, the Golden Eagles baseball team faces off against the Eagles from Biola University. CUI still holds onto hope after splitting today's doubleheader 1-1, heading into tomorrow's critical doubleheader that will ultimately decide the fate of the Golden Eagles.
The All-American Golden Eagle,
Jake Covey, started on the mound for game one and threw an impressive 8.2 innings, allowing only 5 hits, 2 ERs, with 9 Ks. Covey's impressive game helped CUI keep the Eagles' bats at bay so that the Golden Eagles could shine.
The Eagles held CUI scoreless up until the seventh inning, but when the Golden Eagles started to warm up their bats up in the top of the seventh, they never looked back. CUI took the lead in the top of the 7th, 3-2, singling up the middle and scoring three. This allowed the offensive floodgates to open up.
The Golden Eagles scored another seven insurance runs in the top of the 9th, making the final score of the first game 10-2, keeping the team's hopes of making the PacWest Conference Tournament alive.
Coming into game two, the Golden Eagles looked to keep their momentum with hot bats and great pitching. CUI made the first punch of the game, scoring in the top of the third off a
Landry Spitler single to left field, allowing
Haku Dudoit to score.
Despite the Golden Eagles throwing the first punch, the Eagles had other plans to regain and take the lead. During the same inning, Biola responded by scoring seven runs and didn't look back after that.
Even with CUI's loss in the second game, the Golden Eagles are still fighting for a spot in the PacWest Conference Tournament. They will play a doubleheader tomorrow, March 2nd, at 12:00 and 3:00 PM at Biola University. The Golden Eagles need to win both games in order to take the last spot in the PacWest Tournament.
