A Tale of Two Soccer Halves

Golden Eagles Cornered the Visiting Cougars For Two Goals In the First Half

IRVINE, Calif. – A pair of first-half goals off of corner kicks helped the CUI men's soccer team build a 2-0 advantage against Cal State San Marcos on Monday night.

CUI cashed in for the first goal off a corner in the seventh minute of action. Nathan Nava booted the ball in to the box and Domenyk Jara immediately used his head to redirect the ball to the opposite side of the goal. Ryan Smith then headed the pass past the goalie to make it 1-0 CUI.

Roughly six minutes later, Hugo Viramontes net his first career goal as a Golden Eagle after he headed the ball past the keeper off another corner by Angel Reyes.

The Golden Eagles were sitting pretty after the first 45 minutes were in the books. But to the visitors credit, Cal State San Marcos did not give up and kept battling to get back into the match.

The Cougars ultimately scored three times in the final 31 minutes of action to eke out a 3-2 win. CSUSM's David Ruiz tallied the game-winner in the final second as time expired to give the Cougars their first victory of the season.

CUI continues its three-game homestand this Thursday against UC Merced. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.  Cal State East Bay will then visit Irvine for a rare Sunday non-conference affair which will begin at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28 at Golden Eagles Field.
