CUI Secures Third Straight Shutout

The Ladies Completed Their Road Trip Without Allowing A Single Goal

IRVINE, Calif. - It certainly appears that the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team is back on track.

The Golden Eagles emerged with their fourth shutout victory of the regular season after holding on for a 1-0 win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday.

Bella Barrett gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish when she broke through the box and submitted a timely shot to the right side of the net.  It wound up being the only goal of the entire match as the team's SAAC representative earned the game-winner after some great defense by both teams.

Riley Urquiza made three saves including a huge one with heavy traffic in front late in the second half. In the 85th minute, Gianna Foss put two shots on goal for the Otters but one was blocked by CUI's Sloane De Torres who used her body to protect the near side of the goal right along the post. The rebound came back to Foss but Urquiza gobbled up the ensuing second shot to protect CUI's narrow margin.

The Golden Eagles held on for the 1-0 road victory and improved to 4-1-1 overall this season.  CUI has only allowed two goals through their first six matches and are outscoring opponents 12-2 so far during the non-conference portion of their September schedule.

The CUI women's soccer team is receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA DII Poll as well. CUI began the season ranked No. 25 in the nation and has risen as high as No. 5 nationally in recent years.

Next up for the ladies from Irvine is a local date this Saturday, Sept 27 at 11:00 a.m. PT at Vanguard. It will be a non-conference match between PacWest opponents, as this year's schedule was tweaked over the summer to include a few matches that will not count in the league standings after Academy of Art closed its athletics programs.

The next home game for CUI will be the conference opener against Dominican on the following Saturday, Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. PT. It will be the first PacWest Conference doubleheader of the fall with the men's soccer match to follow at 2:30 p.m.
