A Justified Comeback At Jessup

Darcuiel Drops Career-high 27 Points; Hopkins Collects Fourth Double-Double in Five Games

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Concordia University Irvine freshman Asia Darcuiel set a new career-high in scoring with 27 points on Saturday to help the Golden Eagles knock off the Jessup Warriors 78-66.

After scoring 22 points on three occasions already this season, Darcuiel took it up a notch on 8-of-14 shooting while making a career-high 10 free throws against the Warriors. The San Diego native has now scored in double figures in eight of her last nine games.

Recently named PacWest Defender of the Week Genesis Hopkins also had a great day on the court. The sophomore transfer from Sonoma State powered her way to her fourth double-double in five games and controlled the boards. Hopkins finished with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Hopkins also collected three blocks to extend her impressive streak to 11 straight games with at least two denials or more.

Concordia had to dig deep after falling behind by 10 points in the second quarter. Concordia built a 14-4 lead roughly five minutes in to the contest, but the Warriors came roaring back and rattled off a 15-0 run to flip the scales by the time the teams started approaching halftime. The Golden Eagles clawed back in to it with eight straight points to close the second thanks to buckets and free throws by Camryn Kiernan and Myia Collins.

That duo wound up being big for the Green and Gold and combined for 30 points. Collins scored 16 and added six rebounds, while Kiernan hit two treys and added a team-high three steals.

"We can't replicate this type of adversity or these situations in practice, so tonight was incredibly valuable for this young group," said CUI head coach Christine Collins-Kiernan. "Getting meaningful minutes while learning how to reset a game and take it back is part of the growth process, and our players embraced that challenge. We had numerous big-time efforts from multiple people, which speaks to the depth and belief within this team.

Concordia finished off its Northern California road trip 2-0 after a dominating win at Fresno Pacific on Thursday night.

"Winning a road-trip swing is a big win for our program, and leaning into a Team of the Week mentality is exactly what this group hunts," added Collins-Kiernan. "They continue to grow, stack skills, and learn together. The path doesn't get easier with this being our third road trip of the month, but everything this group has brought to our program this season has been pure."

The Golden Eagles will be back in Irvine briefly before heading to Hawaii to play a pair out on the islands this coming week. That begins with a date at Hawaii Hilo on Thursday, Jan. 22.
