ATHERTON, Calif. -
Genesis Hopkins scored 12 points and hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds and two blocks to lead the Concordia Golden Eagles in their road tilt with Menlo College.
It was the first double-double for Hopkins in her Concordia career after joining the team from Sonoma State.
In an oddity for college basketball games, both the Golden Eagles and Oaks did not shoot a single free throw in the entire first half. Concordia did finish the game a sizzling 14-for-15 at the charity stripe with Hopkins making all four of her free throws and
Camryn Kiernan going a perfect 6-for-6 at the line.
Concordia erased a 22-18 halftime deficit with a strong third quarter. The Golden Eagles scored more points in the third (26) then they did in the entire first half (18) and entered the fourth with a 44-43 lead. That was partly due to strong shooting at the line, with 12 of CUI's 14 made free throws coming in that third period.
CUI took a 49-46 lead on a three-pointer by
Camryn Kiernan early in the fourth quarter. However, the Oaks finished the game on a 16-8 run to salvage a 62-57 victory.
Kiernan led the team with 15 points and three assists. Junior point guard
Hannah Vela added nine points and sophomore Cadance Tarrant was a steadying presence with eight points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
Hopkins and Tarrant helped CUI rack up 13 offensive rebounds which also helped lead to a dozen second chance points.
True freshman guard
Asia Darcuiel racked up a career-high five steals in her third straight start. She finished with seven points to help the cause.
The Golden Eagles return home for their next two games later this week. Concordia hosts Vanguard on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT and then former Golden Eagle
Izzy Navarro and the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday. The men's teams will also face off following the ladies at 7:15 p.m. PT on both nights for key conference contests.
This will mark four games in a span of eight days for both Concordia basketball teams.
