A Battle of Wits And Two Top PacWest Teams

No. 23 Concordia and Biola Needed Extra Serves To Determine Multiple Sets

LA MIRADA, Calif. – It was a battle of wits and a battle of the top two teams in the PacWest Conference on Tuesday night as No. 23 Concordia visited Biola.

First place was on the line and multiple sets went down to the wire. After Biola took the first set 25-18, Concordia rallied for a 26-24 victory. Emma Wegleitner placed one of her team-high 17 kills to cement the win in that important second set.

Biola responded by winning the third set but the fourth stanza was a back-and-forth slugfest. CUI had set point three times but Biola kept drawing even to extend the match. After the score was tied 28-28, Biola pieced together two points in a row to win the match in four.

Wegleitner hit .350 on the evening and also finished with a double-double by providing 13 digs. It's the seventh straight match she has recorded at least 10 or more kills and her eighth double-double of the season.

Fellow senior Kayden Croy added 10 kills and five digs to help the cause while Halen Kiefer racked up 12 digs in the libero jersey.

Concordia setter Nevada Knowles handed out 36 assists while scooping up a team-high 15 digs. Knowles also placed three aces while Kendyll Winn added two more from the service line.

Sophomore Gabby Johnson provided a spark off the bench in the middle and placed a career-high seven kills to go with four blocks. She also hit .428 on the night.

The Golden Eagles are now 8-2 record in conference play and with eight straight sweeps to their name.

This marks the first of two meetings between the two top-notch squads as Biola will visit Irvine next Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. PT

The Eagles were receiving votes in the most recent AVCA DII National Poll and moved into first place with a 10-2 league record. There's a chance both CUI and Biola are ranked next week.

Before the rematch, CUI will be back at home for two more conference matches with Jessup coming to town on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by the Dominican Penguins this Saturday at 2 p.m.
