CUI Crushes Biola In WWPA Rematch

Joao Goncalves Cashed In For Five Goals To Lead The Charge

IRVINE, Calif. - The defending WWPA conference champs asserted themselves once again against their rivals in the pool for a statement victory in late October.

The Concordia Golden Eagles dominated Friday night's match against Biola, opening up an eight goal lead at one point and cruising to a 16-9 victory to sweep the season series.

Joao Goncalves led the way with a game-high five goals. He added two assists and two steals in a great all-around effort.

Hugo Wouters and Kaliq Khan both added two goals and two assists apiece while Canyon Johnson also chipped in with two scores.

Dimitrios Koritsas and Nicholas Fuchs both finished with three points (one goal and two assists). Porter Rosenlof, Dante Soldati Ianora and Cade Peterson also each scored once to the delight of the home crowd, which include the CUI women's water polo team dressed up as members of the KISS band for Halloween weekend.

Derek Maddox earned the victory in the cage and played nearly 30 of the 32 minutes before giving way to Ethan Sutherland who finished the contest and picked up a save before the final buzzer.

CUI improved to 17-11 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Biola fell to 12-14 and 2-2 in the WWPA.

The Golden Eagles have two more games remaining against WWPA opponents UC Merced and Fresno Pacific but are on track to be the No. 1 seed in the west in the upcoming WWPA Tournament in November. That will be hosted this time by Biola.

CUI is back in action at home next Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. PT against UC Merced before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, No. 7 at 1 p.m.
