IRVINE, Calif. – For the second straight time,
Hugo Wouters stood out in the pool as not only one of the best performing Concordia Golden Eagles but one of the best in the entire league.
He was rewarded for his outstanding efforts by being named WWPA Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row.
The sophomore standout scored 24 goals and handed out 11 assists this week over the course of six total games. In all, Wouters averaged four goals and just under two helpers per contest to help CUI go 4-2 on the week. He also went 9-2 in the sprints to help CUI earn early possessions.
His impressive totals included a career-high eight goals and an assist in CUI's 17-13 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Wouters also collected a season-high five steals against No. 7 Long Beach State and racked up 11 recorded steals and two field blocks on the week.
The Golden Eagles topped McKendree University in a non-conference match 17-11 in their home opener last Thursday before dispatching a game squad in Mount Saint Mary's by a count of 18-14. Wouters paved the way with one goal and five assists against the Bearcats before pouring in five goals against The Mount.
Levi Riegelmann also capitalized on offense with a career-high six goals against McKendree.
Wouters and company carried momentum from that doubleheader into Friday. The Netherlands native scored four times in both contests against Whitter and Claremont-Mudd Scripps, helping Concordia secure a 15-8 victory over the Poets.
He finished off a superb week in the water with the most goals he has ever scored in a collegiate game. His eight goals against Cal Lutheran by far outranked his five goals he scored earlier this season against Harvard as well as the team's first meeting against Cal Lutheran.
The Golden Eagles have another busy week ahead of them with conference games on the horizon.
First up is a date up north with UC Merced on Friday afternoon followed by a matinee with Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
The next home contest for the Green and Gold will be against LMU on Friday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. PT.
