IRVINE, Calif. - It's extremely hard to hit a home run over the fence in the softball stadium at Orange County Great Park. For five years, Concordia had not had a player accomplish that feat.
But by the end of Sunday's game with Colorado State Pueblo, a record three Golden Eagles had gone yard in a span of 48 hours.
Morgan Kneubuhler and
Caitlynn Campbell went yard in back-to-back at-bats in a big third inning to help CUI push ahead of the ThunderWolves. CUI turned a 4-1 deficit in to a 6-4 lead with a crooked number of five runs on the scoreboard in that frame.
Kneubuhler added a RBI single for some insurance in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-4 which would be the final score. Four pitchers combined to deliver the victory with starter
Jayden Nishi and Kailaini Tatro handling the first few innings. Freshmen pitchers
Payton Dedo and Paeytnn Snobar bridged the gap to the final out, with Tatro earning her first career win for Concordia and Snobar securing her first career save.
The Tournament Champion was Cal State San Marcos who went 4-1 overall and sported a fantastic +27 in run margin. Concordia and CSUSM both finished 4-1 but the Cougars had the wider margin of victory over the course of the three day tournament. In fact, five of the 25 schools participating ended up going 4-1 with Cal State San Marcos, Tournament Runner-Up Cal State Monterey Bay (+24 run differential), Colorado Christian (+21), Cal State East Bay (+11) and Concordia (+4).
On deck for the Golden Eagles is a home doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene this Wednesday, Feb 4 starting at 3 p.m. back on campus.
Concordia will then play in another tournament next weekend over in Lake Elsinore, Calif. hosted by Cal State San Marcos. Opponents on Friday will include Simon Fraser and Colorado Christian. Games will be at the Rosetta Canyon complex.
