Possible Postseason Preview: CUI Clashes With Westmont

Darcuiel Drops 27 Points Against Warriors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In a matchup of two of the top teams in the PacWest Conference standings, the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the Westmont Warriors.

The possible postseason preview on Wednesday featured the current No. 4 and No. 6 seeds in the league.

True freshman Asia Darcuiel scored 10 of Concordia's first 12 points to start the game. The Lincoln High School alum has been a revelation this season and led the charge again for the Green and Gold with a team-high 27 points on the night.

This is the seventh time already that the San Diego native has scored at least 20 or more points at the collegiate level. Darcuiel shot 11-for-18 from the field and sank two three-pointers.

Sophomore Sophie McWatt provided some solid passing off the bench and assisted on Darcuiel's second trey of the day. Her dime to Myia Collins inside for a layup was sandwiched around a three-point play by Camryn Kiernan. CUI completed the first quarter in control and with a 19-15 lead.

Things got tight in the second quarter and CUI took a one-point advantage into the halftime locker room after Kiernan slipped a pass to McWatt for a nifty bucket. But in the second half, the Warriors jumped in front and started to create a little separation.

Westmont expanded its lead to 12 in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles kept clawing their way back in to the game. Senior Kayla Cabaccang sank a clutch triple in the corner off a pass from 3-time PacWest Defender of the Week Genesis Hopkins to bring CUI within 60-51.

A driving layup by Darcuiel with 1:20 remaining in regulation brought Concordia within four points of tying the contest. But Westmont made enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the victory.

Westmont took the season series, but there is a chance these teams could meet for a third time at the upcoming PacWest Conference Championships.

Concordia is back at it this Saturday, Feb. 14 at Vanguard. This will be the second of four straight road games for the Golden Eagles before their final home game of the year on Senior Night against Hawaii Pacific. That home date is set for Saturday, Feb. 28 back in Irvine.
