IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles turned their home opener into a statement Saturday morning, defending their sand with authority to sweep Cal State LA and Vanguard University in a pair of decisive victories.
CUI 5, Cal State LA 0
The Green and Gold opened the day with a commanding 5-0 sweep over Cal State LA, setting the tone early across all five courts without dropping a single set in the match.
At the No. 1 position, Olivia Medina and Aliyah Moore controlled the match from start to finish, defeating Samarah Dacoud and Teegan Charapata in straight sets, 21-7, 21-18. The duo's balanced attack and defensive consistency secured the first point of the morning for Concordia.
Gabrielle Reinking and Lexi Godbey followed with a strong showing at Pair No. 2, earning a 21-12, 21-15 victory over Juliana Speiski and Agnieszka Gastala to give CUI a 2-0 advantage.
The momentum continued at No. 3 as Kelia Giusta and Ashley Rossi cruised to a decisive 21-8, 21-8 win against Zuhal Cetin and Avalon Heint. Rosie Cline and Jordan Vander Veen were equally dominant at No. 4, rolling to a 21-3, 21-14 victory.
Julie Watney and Madi Kelly capped off the sweep at the No. 5 spot with a 21-9, 21-12 win over Havannah Vogel and Anaiya Cooper, sealing the 5-0 team triumph.
CUI 4, Vanguard 1
The Golden Eagles returned to the sand in the afternoon to face Vanguard, displaying their strength to earn a 4-1 team victory.
Medina and Moore remained unbeaten on the day at No. 1, earning a 21-8, 21-14 win over Thea Snider and Josephine Springer to put CUI on the board early.
Reinking and Godbey continued their stellar play at Pair No. 2, defeating Hayden Johnston and Avery Bennett in straight sets, 21-12, 21-9. Giusta and Rossi secured the third team point with a 21-19, 21-13 victory at No. 3 over Jordan Packer and Elsa Gilmore, fending off a competitive first set before pulling away.
Cline and Vander Veen added another point at No. 4 with a 21-15, 21-16 decision against Gianna Pecile and Jadyn Starling, clinching the team win for Concordia.
At No. 5, Watney and Kelly battled in the tightest contest of the day but ultimately fell in a hard-fought three-set match, 21-23, 20-22, to Jenae Moore and Anne Mayfield, accounting for Vanguard's lone point.
In the exhibition sixth pair match, Teagan Algarra and Emma Hugeback earned a 21-15, 21-11 victory over Maya Jones and Kyra Myers.
UP NEXT
CUI travels on the road for a marquee weekend in Los Angeles, competing in the Battle of LA Tournament. The Golden Eagles will open play Friday with a pair of matchups against Loyola Marymount University at 10 a.m. before taking on Long Beach State University at 12 p.m.
Action continues Saturday as the Golden Eagles face California Polytechnic State University at 12 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. showdown with University of Southern California.
