IRVINE, Calif. - Goalkeeper
Jaden Soto made 14 saves including a key stop early in the fourth quarter to help Concordia women's water polo top Cal State Fullerton 10-7 on Thursday.
Soto was fantastic in the cage and one of the highlights came during a 5M opportunity for the Titans with the score 8-7 in favor of Concordia. Soto protected the lead by making the save and CUI was able to shutout the Titans the rest of the match. Soto also came up with four steals which was most on the squad.
Another highlight came literally right before halftime.
Sofia Smith donned the goalie cap for about 25 seconds for Concordia's last possession of the second period and found
Munroe Blem for a quick goal with one second left on the clock before the halftime horn. That made it 5-3 Concordia
The Golden Eagles played fantastic defense as a whole in this game - most notably in that second period. The Titans did not score at all in the second, as CUI outscored them 4-0 and managed to turn a 3-1 deficit into a two-goal lead. CSUF never regained the lead.
Freshman standout
Mia Hueston led the Concordia offense with four goals and two assists. Blem had a great all-around game too with two goals, an assist and a steal.
Alexa DeVilliers added two goals and
Kennedy Brubaker helped out with two assists, while
Lucy Aggs and
Anna Tyukasz each added a goal apiece. Plus, senior
Hannah Edwards came up with some huge plays at key moments, including two sprint wins in the second half to go with a perfectly time steal.
The Golden Eagles are now 8-6 overall and have won five of their last six games.
Next up for Concordia is a home date with the Michigan Wolverines on Tuesday, March 3 at 11 a.m. PT back at Woollett Aquatics Center.
