IRVINE, Calif. - You can't ask for anything more than a chance.
The Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team made the most of that opportunity on Senior Night as the squad celebrated a thrilling 93-90 victory over Hawaii Pacific University.
MaCarhy Morris hit the game-winner on a floater with seven seconds left in regulation to put CUI up 92-90 and the Sharks did not score again. With the win, CUI clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming PacWest Conference Championships by winning tiebreakers over Jessup and Dominican. Â
Morris finished with 22 points to lead six Golden Eagles in double figures. Sharpshooter
Kaden Minter scored 11 points and had a team-high eight rebounds,
Nick Corbett added 10 points and six boards and
Radek Homer had one of his best all-around games with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Seniors
Logan Cremonesi and
Jackson Tucker were also vital to Concordia coming away with the victory.
Tucker hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to 12 points on the evening along with his usual spirited defensive play. Cremonesi scored a career-high 11 points and added three rebounds while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor. Cremonesi also came up with a huge steal late in the second half and Tucker was in on a late defensive stop moments after the go-ahead bucket by Morris.
"We've had some really difficult and demoralizing stretches this season and our guys have responded like champions every time," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "I'm so happy for them that they did that again to close out the regular season like they did - and earn a berth to the conference tourney. They deserved it. And couldn't be happier for our two seniors who came through in every possible way in their last home game. Incredible."
CUI led 49-42 at halftime after jumping out to an early 11-4 advantage. Joshua West scored 21 of his game-high 39 points for the Sharks in the first half and was a perfect 8-for-8 to start. That included going 5-for-5 from three point land in the first half as well.
In was raining threes on Saturday as both teams caught fire from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles wound up shooting 10-for-22 from downtown - which was a sizzling 45.5 percent on those threes - while HPU was right there at 41 percent by going 10-of-24 on triples.
Concordia rounded out the regular season with a sterling overall record of 15-13 and finished 12-10 in PacWest play. The Golden Eagles have twice had a 5-game winning streak in conference play... and then also had just lost four in a row before securing the crucial win over HPU in the last home game for their seniors.
CUI will now play No. 3 seed Fresno Pacific on Thursday, March 5 at 12:30 p.m. PT in the PacWest quarterfinals, with No. 2 seed Westmont looming in the semifinal round.
