Converging On Two Philadelphia Teams

CUI Tops La Salle & Goes Toe-To-Toe with Villanova

ORANGE, Calif. – The Concordia Golden Eagles took on two D1 water polo teams from the Philadelphia area on Friday as the Convergence Tournament got underway.

The Green and Gold held their own and defeated one of the two East Coast squads behind balanced efforts on both offense and defense. Overall, CUI had eight different players cash in for a total of 20 goals on the day.

Mia Hueston led the way with six goals after the doubleheader was completed.

Game 1: CUI 11, La Salle 9

Mia Hueston scored three times and Munroe Blem again showed off her versatility with two goals and three assists in the first game of the tournament for CUI.

Facing the Explorers, who entered the day with a 7-1 record, the Golden Eagles trailed 6-5 at intermission. CUI was down 7-5 early in the third period but rallied for three straight goals and closed the game on a 4-2 run.

Blem scored with under a minute to go in the third to put CUI in front to stay, 8-7. Hueston scored twice in the fourth, sandwiched around Blem's other clutch goal to help the Golden Eagles get some extra breathing room.

Concordia wound up handing La Salle just its second loss of the season by holding on for the 11-9 win.

Sophomore Anna Tyukasz and senior sprinter Hannah Edwards each converted off a 5M penalty shot. Edwards also won both of the second half sprints, while Hueston won the first two for CUI. Just like Tyukasz, Sofia Smith and Kennedy Brubaker each added one score and an assist. Amber Lewis and Sierra Ferguson also scored once to help the Green and Gold.

Junior goalkeeper Jaden Soto collected nine saves and added a pair of steals.

Game 2: Villanova 12, CUI 6

Hueston scored three more times in the night cap against the Villanova Wildcats. Edwards also notched a goal later in the third period. Sofia Smith also scored late in the second quarter to give CUI some momentum into the halftime break.

But the 'Cats net three goals in every period, which added up to a 12-6 win for Villanova.

Concordia continues its time at the Convergence tournament on Saturday against McKendree and Santa Clara. The Golden Eagles will play the Bearcats first in the morning at 9:45 a.m. PT.
