Concordia Claims RMAC Title - In Overtime!

The Golden Eagles Won A Thriller, Topping The No. 1 Seed Westminster in Overtime

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - For the second straight playoff game, the Concordia University Irvine men's lacrosse team played an overtime thriller.

And now the Golden Eagles are RMAC Conference Tournament Champions!

Cameron Regenstreif had his best game of the season with four clutch goals and Noah Pillow scored twice - including the game-winner - to stun the host Westminster Griffins 12-11 in the RMAC Conference Championshp Game.

Jeremy Barnes and Max Texter both scored twice, Gabriel Skegin-Sipes added two assists and Jack Lepore and Erik Hollis also each tallied one goal.

CUI led by one entering the fourth period, but the Griffins tied it up and it was a neck-and-neck dogfight. Tournament MVP Matt Carresi found Texter for a go-ahead goal with a man up to make it 11-10 with just 45 seconds left in regulation.  But Westminster forced overtime by leveling the score with only 11 seconds remaining on the clock.

Face off specialists Cade Poe and Dawson Loudermilk combined to win 15 of 27 draws in the X.  RMAC Defender of the Year Jake Cloutier led the way with six ground balls to join Poe as leaders in that category.

The game was tied 5-5 after the opening period in what looked like a high-scoring affair. Both goalies stepped up big time the rest of the way, as evident by the career-high 17 saves that Brody Woods collected in the cage for CUI.

This marked the second straight playoff game that Concordia won in overtime this weekend. The Golden Eagles also stunned Colorado Mesa on Friday in the RMAC semifinal by the score of 13-12.

"Incredibly proud of the boys resiliency and resolve this weekend," said CUI head coach Jesse Foss. "Whether down by five to Colorado Mesa and having to claw back to win in OT or being up late today and leading the lead slip to have to win in OT. The moment was never too big for them and their belief in themselves was unbreakable."

"I'm incredibly proud of this group and how they have responded the second half of the season," added Coach Foss. "We have to be one of the hottest teams in D2 heading into the post-season. The boys got juice!"

Concordia now heads to the NCAA DII Tournament for the first time in program history as the automatic qualifier from the RMAC. The bracket will be released in early May as the championship field will be revealed in a selection show on Sunday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
