Holding Their Own

CUI Baseball Splits First Pair with No. 23 Westmont

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia Golden Eagles continued their hot streak on the baseball diamond with a superb showing against the nationally-ranked Westmont Warriors on Friday.

The mercy rule almost came in to play as the Green and Gold beat the No. 23 team in NCAA DII and then nearly pulled off another comeback in the second game.

Freshman catcher Ian Stewart had himself a day at the ballpark. The Fontana native had a career day with a total of 5 hits and 8 RBI in Concordia's two games against the Warriors.

Game 1: CUI 11, Westmont 2

After Westmont scored twice in the top of the first inning, this one was all Concordia.

Stewart went 4-for-4 with 7 RBI in the opener to lift the Golden Eagles to an easy victory.

The catcher provided a 3-run double in the third to push CUI ahead 7-2. His next time up in the fifth he added a two-run single to make it 9-2 and then he finished things off with an exclamation point by blasting a two-run homer down the left field line in the seventh to cap the scoring.

CUI starting pitcher Shane Timmons was also fantastic on the mound. He held Westmont scoreless from the second inning onwards, put up four consecutive 1-2-3 innings and even retired 16 straight batters between the third and the eighth. The Edison High School aum tossed a complete game for the first time and went a career-high nine innings for the first time in his young collegiate career. The Golden Eagles have now won in each of his last four appearances.

Game 2: Westmont 7, CUI 6

Westmont jumped out in front once again and seemed determined to make amends for losing in the series opener.

However, CUI clawed its way out of a 6-0 deficit and even managed to put the tying run in scoring position in the last inning.

Concordia got two runs back in the third and two more in the fourth. All of those crossed the plate thanks to either an error by Westmont or a timely groundout that got the job done.

Landry Spitler added another productive out in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated teammate Nicolas Erickson. That made it a one-run ball game with CUI down to its final out.

Brandon Tatch hung on for his fifth save of the season to close it out for Westmont and even the series.

Both teams get to see each other again on Saturday with another PacWest doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. PT.
