IRVINE, Calif. -
Jonathan Moreno was a force on the pitch during Saturday's big win over Cal State San Marcos.
The senior captain was honored as PacWest Player of the Week after having a hand in all three Concordia goals against the Cougars.
He scored after a carom of a shot by
Marcus Ozmai bounced back to him to put CUI on the board.
Later in the second half, the Lakewood, Calif. native passed to
David Garcia for a long distance goal that threw the home supporters into a frenzy.
Then with the game tied 2-2 down the stretch, Moreno crossed to fellow senior
Andy Jun for the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
It was a fitting end in a rematch from last year's close contest that also ended 3-2, but had gone CSUSM's way with a goal as time expired. This was a thrilling form of redemption of sorts for all the returning Concordia players and coaches.
CUI enters its road trip to Colorado this week with a 1-1 record. The Golden Eagles face another type of Cougars when they visit Colorado Christian on Thursday, Sept 3. They then visit Colorado School of Mines on Saturday before returning back to Irvine.
CUI's next home men's soccer match will be on Wednesday, Sept. 9 against Cal State San Bernardino at 6:30 p.m. PT.
