IRVINE, Calif.- Concordia University Irvine's women's soccer team drew a tie against Simon Fraser in a hard fought match in the heat, 3-3.
Simon Fraser had control early in the game. The Red Leafs scored in the 11th and the 40th minutes taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles made some adjustments for the second half and looked to get back into the match. In the 60th minute CUI got on the board with a goal by midfielder Ashley Grubert, assisted by midfielder Antonella Russo. For Grubert, this was already her fifth goal of the season. This was Russo's first assist of the season.
Simon Fraser made the score 3-1 two minutes after the Golden Eagle Goal. However, the women did not give up.
In the 82nd minute, Grubert added another goal off a mistake by the SFU goalie. This was her second goal of the game and sixth overall in a very impressive season.
Two minutes later, the Golden Eagles tied the game up with a goal by Russo. This was her second goal of the year and totaled three points today. The goal was assisted by Irandy Erazo, her second assist of the season.
CUI finished their toughest week of their schedule with two draws over top teams in DII women's soccer.
The women will be back at Golden Eagles Field on Saturday, Sept.19, in a non-conference match up with Point Loma. The game will start at 6:30 p.m..
