CUI Earns Good Grades vs. MIT & Johns Hopkins

The Golden Eagles Flew Back Home Sunday With Smiles After Wrapping Up A 3-1 Road Trip In Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - With a superb showing over a span of about 48 hours, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team returned from its East Coast Road Trip with three wins and a lot of momentum heading into October.

CUI topped MIT (Massachuseetts Institute of Technology) 16-8 on Sunday morning and then handed Johns Hopkins a 17-15 loss before flying back to Southern California.

The Golden Eagles also saw two sophomores hit impressive milestones. Both Dimitrios Koritsas and Hugo Wouters have now scored 100 career goals in their young college careers.  Wouters has scored 106 times since joining the Green and Gold and Koritsas is right there with 104 career goals entering Thursday's home opener.

Those two scoring aficionados will likely have some company in the 100 Club soon. CUI senior Kaliq Khan enters October with 98 career goals and also made his mark over the weekend.

Levi Riegelmann scored three consecutive goals against MIT and joined Koritsas with four goals apiece in that contest to lead the squad on offense. Wouters also had four assists to finish with a team-best seven points against the Engineers. Jadon Pendergrass dished out three dimes while Porter Rosenlof added two helpers.

Wouters also racked up seven points with four goals and three assists against Johns Hopkins. Rosenlof handed out a whopping four assists, Dante Soldati Ianora and Canyon Johnson combined for seven goals, and Pendergrass had multiple field blocks to help the cause.

CUI goalie Derek Maddox was the starter in the cage for all four games in Rhode Island and improved to 9-7 with the two Sunday victories. He was credited with a total of 14 saves in the Sunday doubleheader.

On Saturday, CUI stunned Harvard University 19-18 and then mounted a fierce comeback before falling just short against tournament host Brown University, 15-12.

Against Harvard, Levi Riegelmann scored the game-winner on a buzzer-beater to give Concordia the clutch win.

CUI hosts a doubleheader this Thursday, Oct 1 at Woollett Aquatics Center for its first home games of the year. McKendree visits for a non-conference meeting at 10 a.m. PT followed by Mount Saint Mary's at 1 p.m. PT.
