The 2024-25 season marks the six season for Coach Bergen as head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at Concordia.
His men have finished in the Top 4 at the PCSC Championships every season and the 2022-23 team won the team title in thrilling fashion by a mere 1.5 points on the final race to top the runners-up from UCSC. The women have been consistently in the Top 6 in the 15-team PCSC team race and CUI women qualified multiple swimmers to the NCAA Division II Championships in each of Coach Bergen’s first four years.
As of 2023, the program has earned eight straight CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors and 16 individual CSCAA Academic All-America honors on both the men’s and women’s sides since Coach Bergen’s arrival. Each team has placed as high as third nationally in the Division II rankings as well. In the last four years, CUI swimmers and divers have earned double digit nominations to the Academic Dean’s List.
In the water, the Golden Eagles have won 16 individual and relay PCSC conference titles, earned 19 NCAA Division II qualifiers, and had three swimmers named NCAA All-Americans in Coach Bergen’s first four seasons.
Coach Bergen was a high school and club coach for 20 years prior to his arrival in Irvine. He was a 7-time NCAA Division II All American swimmer at Chico State whose teams finished 5th, 3rd and 4th at NCAA's in his time as a Wildcat. His two sons, Matthew and Ben as well as his wife Patricia are all graduates of UCLA. Patricia is the founder of Casagiove California, is a sales associate at J Crew and a private tutor and the Bergens recently celebrated their 30th anniversary. The family has lived in Dana Point since 1998.
