Jeff Boss became the second head coach of Concordia's Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams in the spring of 2012. His 2012-13 men’s team finished second at the NAIA Championships and his women’s team took fifth. In 2013-14 his men’s team finished fourth at nationals and his women’s team took fifth. His 2014-15 men’s team finished fourth at nationals and his women’ squad was fourth.
In 2015-16, the program’s first year as an NCAA Division II member, his team recorded seven NCAA National Championship Qualifying “B” cuts, and he coached Samantha Leanza, a two-time Academic All-District selection.
He coached the NAIA National Champion Men’s 4 X 100 Yard Freestyle relay team in 2013, NAIA National Champion Baliee Blankemeier (Women’s 400 IM) in 2015 along with 21 NAIA All-Americans. He was voted PCSC Men’s Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
Both men’s and women’s teams have earned Team Scholar Awards for achieving above a 3.0 GPA in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Boss came to Concordia from Mission Viejo High School where he had been the head coach of the boys' swimming and diving team at Mission Viejo from 2001 -2012 and the girls' squads from 2008 – 2012.
While at Mission Viejo, Boss' teams won the CIF-SS Division I Championship in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2003. The Diablos were Runners-Up in 2004 and 2002. He coached 42 CIF Individual State Champions and tutored 154 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association High School All-Americans. Boss has mentored 29 NISCA Academic All-Americans. The LA Times ranked his boys' team #1 in 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003, and 2002 and his girls' team #1 in 2008. The OC Register tabbed his squads #1 in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003, and 2002. Boss was the Los Angeles Times' Swimming Coach of the Year in 2002, the California Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2004, NHSADCA National Coach of the Year Finalist 2007, and OC Register Coach of the Year 2008.
Boss is the founder of Sprint Club Swimming, a USA Swimming chartered swim club, and has been at the helm since its creation in 2010. From 2003-2010 he coached the Mission Viejo Nadadores, a USA Swimming Gold Medal Club, as the Division Director of the 11-12 Age Group. At the Sprint Club and MVN, he has coached swimmers to SCS Age Group and Junior Olympics titles, and SCS and National Top 10 achievements. He has placed swimmers on the Pacific Quad Team, had representatives in the SCS Swim Festival and the North American Age Group Challenge Cup team.
Boss began his head coaching career with the men's swimming team at NCAA Division I University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA from 1980-1983. While at UNI, Boss was also an adjunct professor of physical education and aquatics. He was the founder and head coach of Hawkeye Master's Swimming, who became Iowa State Champions. Boss was also a member of the Executive Committee of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
Boss had a decorated collegiate swimming career under legendary coach James E. ‘Doc' Counsilman at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN from 1974 to 1978. His teams competed in NCAA National Championships and won Big Ten Championships all four years. He participated in the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in 1972 and 1976. After completing his degree, he became a graduate assistant and assistant coach with the men's swimming team at Ball State University in Muncie, IN.
Boss' teaching credentials are extensive. He was a resource specialist in special education at Silverado Continuation High School in Mission Viejo, CA, and taught physical education at Mission Viejo High School. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Northern Iowa and taught courses in physical education at Ball State University as a graduate assistant.
He graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology, and earned his Master of Art's degree in Physical Education from Ball State University.
Boss is certified with the NISCA, American Swimming Coaches Association, USA Swimming, Red Cross, and Heartsaver. He maintains a membership with NISCA, ASCA (Level 4), College Swimming Coaches Association of America, and the World Swimming Coaches Association.
Jeff is married to Margaret, whom he met in college at IU. They have two sons and one daughter and two grandchildren.
