Kyle Friend grew up in Boca Raton, Florida where he went to Spanish River High School and won State Championships in 2006 and 2007. He was the Florida State Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Friend made the USA Youth National Team in 2006 where he earned a silver medal at NORCECA's in Dominican Republic and qualified for World Championships in Mexico where they took 9th place in 2008. Friend earned a scholarship to play for a Division I school in Long Beach State. As a freshman, his team made it to the NCAA National Semifinals. His senior year, they made it to the MPSF Semifinals.

After college, Friend played his first year of professional volleyball in Giesen, Germany in 2011-2012. Following Germany, he then played for a team in Sweden in the small town of Tierp for two years. They took 3rd place in the league both years. In his first year, 2012-2013, he was 2nd in the league in points. After two years in Sweden Kyle got a job in Nafels, Switzerland. In his first season in the Swiss league, they got a bronze medal, losing in the semi-finals of the playoffs. In his 5th and final season as a professional (2015-2016) , his Swiss team won the Swiss cup and Friend was named MVP.

After retiring from professional indoor volleyball, Friend has shifted his focus to beach volleyball. Last summer was his first season on tour for the AVP. Friend and his partner, Myles Muagututia, assistant coach for Concordia's Beach Volleyball team, qualified for 3 main draws and took home a 9th place finish in Hermosa Beach.
