Irene Chavez joined the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball program in the summer of 2017 after graduating from the University of California, Irvine.
During her four years at UCI, she played for the women’s basketball team and received her undergraduate degree in anthropology with a minor in education. Chavez leaves the school ranked in the top ten in free throw percentages and three pointers made.
Before college, Chavez was a four year starter on the varsity basketball team at Gunderson High School in San Jose, California. While at Gunderson she helped her team clinch three regular season league titles and in her junior year her squad reached the semifinals of the Central Coast section. A two- time Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division MVP, Chavez garnered first team all-league honors as well as All-San Jose Mercery News third team recognition. In 2010 she was also named the San Jose Mercury News "Freshman of the Year."
