Matthew-Jonathan Seawright returned to coach throws at Concordia University Irvine in September of 2022 after successful stints as a graduate assistant for CUI in 2020-2021 and as the full-time throws coach at Eastern Illinois University in 2021-2022.

During the 2022-2023 campaign with the Golden Eagles, CUI throws captured seven podium finishes at the PacWest Championships. Sarah Fajer set a new school record in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 49.25 meters as well as the PacWest championship record in the women’s shot put with a mark of 13.84 meters while becoming champion in both events. Jaylen Newman had a strong showing at PacWest championships finishing third in both the men’s shot put and men’s hammer throw.

In 2021-2022, Seawright served as the throws coach at Eastern Illinois University, coaching the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference men’s discus throw champion as well as several other podium finishes. In 2020-2021, Seawright was the graduate assistant throws coach at CUI and coached Chais Hamilton to the 2021 PacWest championships field athlete of the meet as he secured victories in the men’s discus and men’s hammer throw and a second place finish in the men’s shot put.

Prior to Coaching at CUI, Seawright spent 2017-2019 coaching at his Alma Mater UC Irvine; 2017-18 as a volunteer and 2018-2019 as interim throws coach. During his time as interim coach, Seawrights throwers broke several school records and reached the podium in several events highlighted by Barbara Coward. Coward broke the UC Irvine school records in the women’s discus, hammer, and weight throw in 2019 while also winning the Big West title in the hammer throw and Discus throw in 2018 and 2019.

Seawright graduated from UC Irvine in 2017 while earning All-Big West honors in the discus and hammer throw. Prior to UC Irvine, he earned his Associates at Cerritos College in 2015. Seawright hails from Long Beach, California.
