#11 Eagles Turning APU Into Second Home With Sixth-Straight In Azusa
Brian Gaul
Phil Gerber started for CU and earned his first win as an Eagle, going seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, with five K's. Sean Buford earned the save, pitching the final two-innings of no-hit ball with two strikeouts. Chris Kuber was the difference with a three-run homer in the fifth to put Concordia ahead for good. Cody Smith had two hits and Bryan Garza had three hits, a double, and an RBI.
A leadoff double led to an APU run in the first. Concordia got it back in the fourth as two walks, an APU error, and Matt Palmer single knotted things at one. APU took the lead back with another run in the fourth.
Spencer Ofelt and Garza singled in the fifth, and Ofelt scored on Garza's hit. Ryan DiMascio walked and Kuber followed with a three run jack to left.
APU scored one in the seventh, but Buford closed the door from there and CU took the win.
"We played well, and Gerber and Buford were very effective," Concordia head coach Mike Grahovac said. "We need to refocus and be ready for league play against Westmont this weekend."
Concordia improved to 7-6 and travels to Westmont on Friday for the start of a three-game weekend series. First pitch on Friday is at 2:00 pm.
