The Rundown: In a battle to sit alone in first place, Concordia was victorious 1-0 over Point Loma at Eagles Field on Saturday morning, October 17.
By the Numbers: The lone goal came at 63:18 as Miranda Canales sent a wide through ball to Taylor Thurmond on the right side, and Thurmond bounced it off the right post into the net.
The Difference: All seven of Concordia's shots were on goal, and PLNU put five of their nine on goal. Darby Clements pitched a shutout for CUI and improved to 6-1. The game was very even all around.
Critical Plays: 15 minutes into the first half Amanda Koman setup Miranda Canales on a great look but PLNU made the save. With six minutes left in the first PLNU put one off the post, but CUI cleared. CUI was called for a yellow card late in the first half for breaking up a breakaway, and Darby Clements saved the free kick over the cross bar. Midway through the second half CUI broke through, as Taylor Thurmond took a through ball from Canales and bounced it off the right post and in. With 15 minutes left Natalie Werner put a rocket on goal, and CUI had a chance at the rebound but PLNU cleared. With eight minutes left PLNU got a clear look, but Clements made the save.Â
What it Means: The Eagles are now the only one-loss team in the PacWest and control their destiny and path to a possible PacWest Championship.
