Fourth-Straight Shutout Sees Eagles To Calm Storm

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles pitched their fourth-straight shutout with a 3-0 win over Dixie State on Saturday afternoon, October 24, at Eagles Field.

By the Numbers: Alexandra Gerrain and McKenna Carrillo scored for CUI coupled with an own goal for DSU.  Alexis Garcia-Irons and Taylor Thurmond had the assists.  Darby Clements made four saves for CUI and improved to 7-1.  It was the first of the year for Gerrrain and fifth for the freshman Carrillo.

The Difference: CUI outshot DSU 12-7 and 5-4 in shots on goal, but DSU controlled the ball for the majority of the game when it was knotted at zero.  Once the own goal went through, CUI's offense took advantage of the opportunities and put the game away.

Critical Plays: The Red Storm controlled the ball early in the first half, but the Eagles got some chances after the midway point, including looks by Natalie Werner and Kendall Reekstin that sailed high.  DSU put one in the back of the net with 10 minutes left, but offsides made it disallowed.  DSU controlled the first 20 minutes of the second half, winning most loose balls and keeping possession on their end.  At 73:57 a throw-in from Taylor Thurmond resulting in an own goal bouncing of a DSU defender's head, making the count 1-0.  Seven minutes later Alexis Garcia-Irons sent a cross from the left that Alexandra Gerrain finished for her first of the season, as CUI led 2-0.  It became 3-0 at 84:28 when McKenna Carrillo finished a lob pass from Taylor Thurmond.  DSU put one off the post late, but CUI took the 3-0 win.

What it Means: The Eagles remain alone in first place in the PacWest with a 8-2-2 and 7-1 conference record.

Up Next: The Eagles will host BYU-Hawaii at 1 pm at Eagles Field on Tuesday, October 27.  Follow the live links in the inset.
