The Eagles Defeat Azusa For First Time In School History, 2-1 In Double Overtime

The Rundown:  AZUSA, CA- The Concordia Eagles defeated the Azusa Pacific Cougars, 2-1 in double OT, for the first time in school history on Saturday, October 3rd in Azusa.

By the Numbers:  The Cougars were off to an early lead when Victoria Kovatch scored in the 11th minute of play, putting Azusa ahead 1-0.  In the second half, the Eagles still trailed until Taylor Thurmond scored a header into the far post to tie the game 1-1.  Thurmonds goal forced an overtime period and was assisted by Natalie Werner and Kryssa Johnson.  The game winning goal came in double overtime for the Eagles after a corner kick by Alex Gerrain was rebounded by Kendall Reekstin, who set up McKenna Carrillo for the score.  The Eagles won 2-1.

The Difference:  Eagles goalkeeper, Darby Clements, recorded six saves in the win for the Eagles.  The Eagles had 13 shots on the afternoon and the Cougars had 15.

Critical Plays:  The Eagles turned up the intensity after tying the game 1-1 in the second half, recording shots from Alexis Garica-Irons, Amanda Koman, AnMarie Moreno, and McKenna Carrillo until Carrillo buried the game winning goal following a corner kick. 

"This is a great win for our program," CUI head coach Chris Gould said.  "To finally get a win against APU is huge for everyone.  Jason has a fantastic program that he has built and they are usually the team to beat.  Our girls fought for everything today and we are so happy that their effort was rewarded with the win.  We have fantastic leadership and talent in every class.  These ladies are really hungry to set the Concordia standard at the Division II level."

What it Means:  The Eagles defeated the Cougars for the first time in 23 matches between the two schools.  Following the win, the Eagles record advanced to 4-2-2 overall, and 3-1 in the PacWest.

Up Next:  The next matchup for the Eagles is against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday, October 8th at 1 pm at Eagles field.
