The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles gave BYU Hawaii their first PacWest loss of the season Monday night, October 5, downing the Seasiders 3-1 inside CU Arena.
By the Numbers: Rachel Flynn had an impressive night for CUI, hitting .225 with 15 kills. Hannah Andrews stepped in with seven kills and hit .278. Amber Rose smashed eight winners and Kyra Auten added six as both middles were effective. Logan Grove sent out 34 assists and three kills on eight attempts.
The Difference: CUI dominated the block, 8-3, and hit .242 as a team compared to .144 for BYUH. The Seasiders committed 30 attack errors while Concordia only had 14.Â
Critical Plays: BYUH maintained a two-point edge early in set one, until a Seasider error tied it at 9. Two aces from Logan Grove gave CUI the 15-14 lead. Grove snuck a kill over the net and CUI took a 22-19 edge. The Eagles held that edge and took the set 25-22. After a back and forth start, CUI grabbed a 9-7 set two lead on a Kyra Auten kill. The Seasiders regained the edge 16-15. Two BYUH errors gave CUI the 19-17 lead right back. The Eagles pulled away later and won 25-19 thanks to some late Andrews kills. The Eagles grabbed a 13-11 lead in set three, but BYUH tied the game at 14. The Seasiders took control 21-16 and won 25-16. BYUH held a two-point edge through the start of set four. An Andrews kill and BYUH error made it 9-8 CUI. Concordia continued to build and made it 17-12. Concordia held and increased the lead, winning 25-20.Â
What it Means: Concordia improved to 7-9 and 3-4, breaking a two-match skid. BYU Hawaii took their first conference loss and fell to 6-7 and 4-1.
