Eagles Down PacWest Leaders HPU In Four

The Rundown: Concordia continued to play well at home and defeated PacWest-leading Hawaii Pacific 3-1 in CU Arena on Thursday night.

By the Numbers: Rachel Flynn led CUI with 19 kills and hit .224.  Amber Rose and Kyra Auten were great again, with 10 and eight kills respectively.  Ellie Ladensack had nine kills and Hannah Andrews added eight.  Logan Grove and Olivia Zolezzi each served two aces, and Grove added 46 assists and 11 digs.  Taylor Dennison had 30 digs and Flynn had nine.

The Difference: CUI hit .203 and held HPU at .134 in a very even match.  The Eagles led in sideout percentage in every set they won and led in aces 5-3.  HPU doubled in blocks, but CUI had five more digs.

Critical Plays: HPU led briefly in set one, but the teams found themselves tied at eight.  Two aces from Logan Grove put CUI ahead 12-10.  Hannah Andrews smashed one to make it 15-12.  HPU closed the gap a bit, pulling to 20-19.  The Sharks took control late and took the set 25-22.  HPU grabbed control early in the second set, 7-3.  It continued to grow to 15-8.  Two kills from Flynn and a block from Andrews and Amber Rose brought CUI back to 16-15. Two HPU errors saw the set tied at 20.  A tip from Flynn made it 23-22 Eagles.  Two kills from Rose finally ended it 28-26.  The teams battled back and forth early through set three.  A block from Rose and kill from Andrews made it 16-14 Eagles.  Ellie Ladensack smashed a kill and CUI led 21-15.  Flynn finished the set 25-19.  Concordia held the 15-12 lead midway through set four.  HPU scored four straight in response to lead by one.  CUI stopped the bleeding at 18-16.  Auten killed one to tie it at 18.  Olivia Zolezzi sent in an ace and it was 21-18 CUI.   Concordia went sideout from there to win 25-20.

What it Means: Concordia improved to 8-9 and 4-4 after two impressive home wins.  Hawaii Pacific fell to 11-5 and 6-2 in the PacWest.
