The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles could not fight their way back on Wednesday night, and fell to visiting CSU San Marcos, 92-77.
By the Numbers: Matt Scott led CUI with 18 points, and Stephen Grosey had 14 and seven boards. Justin Davis (12), Case Bruton (11), and JT Roach (10) joined them in double figures. Martin Thomas had seven assists.
The Difference: CUI was outrebounded 46-30 and outscored in the paint, 48-32. The Cougars had 22 second-chance points and shot 55%, compared to 39% for CUI.
Critical Plays: CSUSM led 11-2 into the first media timeout. After the second media timeout, CUI ran out on a 9-0 capped by a fastbreak from Martin Thomas to Case Bruton. Justin Davis hit a three with six minutes left to tie the game. The Cougars finished the half on an 11-0 run and led 40-29 at half. Throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half, CSUSM slowly increased their lead and led 62-45 with eight minutes left. The Eagles were never able to get it under 10 points and fell 92-77.
What it Means: Concordia suffered their first loss (2-1), and CSU San Marcos won in their opener.
