The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles pulled away late and defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home on Tuesday, 73-59. The Eagles, recently ranked #25 in the D2SIDA Top-25 Poll, used a late push to spread the margin.
By the Numbers: JT Roach fought foul trouble but still scored 17 points off the bench on five-of-eight shooting. Matt Scott scored 16, going 10-of-11 from the line. Geoff Gerlach scored 10 and grabbed six boards. Martin Thomas had 12 points and led with six steals. Justin Davis supplied five assists.
The Difference: Concordia won in the paint, 30-14, and scored 33 points off 25 Stag turnovers, while only giving it away eight times. CMS shot 56%, but the turnovers were too much in the end.
Critical Plays: A three from Roach, rebound and putback from Grosey, and fastbreak from Martin Thomas put CUI ahead 13-6 six minutes in. Both teams were shooting well from three in the first half, but a putback from Geoff Gerlach put CUI ahead 24-19 with 6:34 remaining. A second chance gave Roach a three, and CUI led 33-25 with one minute left. The Eagles led 33-29 at the break. The Stags tied the game at 35 to start the second half and grabbed the lead 38-37. Adam Turner regained the lead on two foul shots. A dunk from Grosey capped an 8-0 CUI run as CUI led 50-42 with seven minutes left. CMS came storming back 52-51. A Matt Scott steal and score put Concordia up 64-57 with two left. A three-point play from Scott put CUI up 10 and sealed the victory.
What it Means: Concordia improved to 9-1 on the season, and CMS fell to 6-3.
