Eagles Erase 13 Point Halftime Deficit To Win PacWest Opener In OT

The Rundown:  In their first even PacWest game, the Concordia Eagles used a 13-point comeback to defeat Chaminade, 92-89, in overtime in Honolulu.

By the Numbers:  JT Roach came off the bench to lead CUI with a career-high 27 points on nine-of-15 shooting.  Stephen Grosey recorded a huge double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds.  Matt Scott joined in double figures with 15 points.

The Difference:  The Eagles trailed 49-36 at the half, but changed the split at the half to send the game to overtime, 82-82.  The Eagles 12 offensive rebounds led to 13 second-chance points and Roach led the 40 bench points CUI recorded.

Critical Plays:  A jumper from Mike Mellinger gave CUI the lead with six minutes left in the first half, before CUH finished the half on a 17-6 run.  The lead grew to 14 in the second half before CUI started chipping away.  With 10 minutes left CUI had it in single digits, and a three from Roach with five minutes cut it to four, 77-73.  Grosey hit a jumper with one minute left to tie at 82, but CUI did not have a game-winning attempt.  CUI briefly trailed in overtime, but Roach tied with a jumper and Martin Thomas hit a three.  Chaminade had one shot to win the game, but missed and Scott grabbed the rebound.

"They scored the ball really well on us, but this was an incredible comeback, one of the best I can remember," CUI head coach Ken Ammann said.  "Our guys hung in there and found a way to compete.  We had to grind that one out, and fought the whole game to get over the hump and catch them.  It was really an incredible battle from our guys."

What it Means:  Concordia improved to 6-1 and now 1-0 in the PacWest, winning their first-ever conference game.

Up Next:  With one day off, the Eagles will hit the floor at Hawaii Pacific at 5 pm on Saturday.
